What direction should I persue in my Computer Science education?

I have two more years left in my Computer Science major. I would like to make good money after I graduate. Very good money

What should I focus on?

Software

Hardware

Networking

Internet

Help Desk/ Analysist

Corporate

UNIX

Should I minor in something?

What direction should I persue in my Computer Science education?
I would look at something that is going to be completely hands on and something that will always be around. Engineering and design of new equipment, software, protocols etc... Computer Security!!!

In my opinion, networking will eventually move towards a plug %26amp; play wireless environment. Any one will be able to do it and forgo the need of specialist in that area. The only people doing real network will be those people laying and running cables for businesses, and maintaining the existing infrastructure.

Many things like software, help desks etc... are sadly being outsourced to 3rd world countries where they work for 50 cents an hour and there's no way you can compete at that wage/salary.

Since we are now in the computer age and the last two generations have basically grown up side by side with computers, they will be far more literate than their parents, and teaching basic computer use will be a thing of the past. It will essentially be a self learned skill like speech as children grow up now.

Computer Security will probably be the big thing for the long run. Any thing that has to do with the theory, the design or manufacturing of computer equipment, like the whole engineering process will also be something that you should consider.
Reply:T.D,

I went to the hardware side of it and i make ok money , but i live in a small town to.

but if i were you i'd take a hard look at software and programing..

Good luck hope this helps.
Reply:Lots of software development work is being offshored. Same for Help Desk and Internet-related work. Right now security is hot, so you might think about that. Also, Unix might be good since there are fewer unix admins around than there used to be.

Good luck - I have a Masters in IS and all I could find was a PC support position. :-( It really depends upon the market where you live/plan to live.
