I'm arguing with a kid online who, despite never attending high school and never going through home schooling courses, plans on getting his GED and going into computer science. He's almost 18.
What's a GED useful for? Can it get you into any high standard college for Computer Science?
You can do that. It is unlikely, however, that a "high standard college" would accept him with JUST his GED. He'd probably have to go to community college first for two years and then transfer.
Reply:Well to get your GED you have to know somethings. It's akin to a Civil Service test.
And he's either playing with you or is in for a shocker.
Everything above JC/CCs want SAT or ACT with 1850 or better and you have to take a math and English placement
If you don't pass those they don't get in (at a CC you go into baby math and baby English which don't count for your core)
Math is pre-calc (algebra-trig)
Computer Science majors require
Calculus 1
Statistics
Physics 1
Chemistry 1
Electronics 1
Then all the computer stuff including 2 years of programming language.

Reply:You can get into a four year college with a GED. The college looks at the score on the GED tests, and you also have to take placement test to see what classes you have to take (such as freshmen or remedial). GED is a hard test that only 1 out of every four high school seniors can pass it.
Reply:It really depends on the college. Two-year colleges usually have no problem with a GED and then the degree will transfer to a four-year college. Four-year colleges are stricter, but they will sometimes accept a GED, along with an entrance exam.

I don't know what kind of jobs you can get with a bachelor's in Computer Science. Do people who work in this field get pay good money? How much?

It depends on what area you decided to focus in on. Coming out of college with a C.S. degree will open up a alot of jobs for you...however experience is a BIG thing in this industry. You won't start out making $100,000 (try about $60,000) as a programmer...and you'll also need to figure out WHAT you want to program. Some software will be heavy in math (ie: computer games) others will not (ie: website development), figure out what you like to write and stick to that. Also alot of software development companies looks for people who know specific languages (java, python, c/c++, etc). Master a couple languages so that you'll be well rounded in the field.

As for positions, you could go into systems analysis, IT, product marketing, product design, programming, and any number of other tech fields.

Should a degree in computer science involve a requirement to take anatomy physiology?
I have enrolled in a college to complete my Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and they are requiring I take Anatomy Physiology I do not feel these two subjects correspond with one another. Anyone have ideas as to why this course would be required?

If it is part of this college's curriculum, then you will need to understand hand/wrist mechanics, colour and movement perception, the normal range of hearing abilities, and the physiological effect of unsuitable screen positions and seating.

If it is, it could just be because your college is trying to make sure all of their majors have had a taste of all kinds of sciences, but usually they just make you do electives. Requiring that specific course sounds strange. You should ask someone at your school. Maybe it was a misprint or maybe there is a reason.
