Do you need a laptop for a computer science major?

I'm looking to purchase a new computer. I'm taking computer science at college in the fall and common sense would tell me I need to buy a laptop as I might need to bring it in for presentations and notes and programming. I realize that not every classroom I'll be in will have a comprehensive computer lab. Is this a correct assumption and should I buy a laptop for school.

or are my assumptions not true and a laptop won't be needed and I should buy another desktop?

Do you need a laptop for a computer science major?
Get a good laptop. You'll want this as a workhorse. To do papers, homework and bring to class. Keep ypur old desktop and try to find one or two more as well. You'll want a machine or 3 to play with. You know to test some theories and just get a good look at how things work while networked and so on.
Reply:PC is better than laptop, but in some case laptop is more user friendly and very mobile, depending on your need. nowadays laptop has the equal capability as PC, so up to you if you prefer laptop. its very handy...Good luck! all the best!
Reply:Ask your college professors. In some colleges having laptops ARE required. If they aren't required, then buying a desktop will give you lower cost, more expandability, and security (for being not as easy to steal). Personally though, I will purchase a lower end laptop for convenience.
Reply:I don't have the expertise to really answer your question but here are a few things to consider looking in to. I'm taking a basic computer course at the local college. We have classes in a lab where computers are provided. I can't imagine offering a computer course where they aren't. Also, look into a flash drive. They are small enough to attach to your key chain. You insert it onto the computer in class, download your work and plug it into your desktop at home. Write your name on the flash drive with a bold felt tip pen. I understand it is common to leave them in the lab computer and when you go to lost and found they all pretty much look alike. Good luck.
