What do you think about Computer Science Majors Going To Medical School?

I'm a computer science major that simply wants a CS Degree just to rely on while I'm attending Medical School but after that not so important. Planning to be Psychiatrist One day!!!

What do you think about Computer Science Majors Going To Medical School?
I did a computer engineering degree from 1995-1999. I then went to medical school. I am now a PGY-3 resident in radiology.

If you are interested in computer science and medecine that is a great combo. But of course you need to be sure you can perform well in computer science.

Psychiatry and computer science are two different worlds. If you are the kind of person interested in computer science and brain, I would definitly more recommend considering neurology than psychiatry.
Reply:AS long as you take the prescribed "pre-med" series of classes at your college, you can major in anything.
Reply:They don't let you work while in Med school, only 30% of people who apply get in though so smart move.... Med schools accept every major but to get a good grade on MCATS its better to be like a science major.... or since you want to be a psychiatrist maybe a psychology major..

but what ever you decide to do you still need

1 year of biology and lab

1 year of Chemistry and lab

1 year of organic chemistry and lab

1 year of English

1 year of physics and lab

1 year of calculus or higher math

Above are the pre-med subjects that all Med students have to take before applying to med school.. Good luck..

here is a very good website check it out :

Reply:Sounds like a great combination. Medicine requires a lot of analytical thinking/problem solving and CS definitely prepares you for that!
Reply:You can get into med school with any undergraduate degree as long as you can pass the MCATs.

Pre-med isn't the only option. You could also do your undergrad work in psychology considering your ultimate career goal.

The biggest challenge you will face is unfamiliarity with medical terminology, so you'll probably want to minor in chemistry, biology, microbiology, biochemistry, etc. A minor in classics would also help - classics majors do better in med school than even pre-med students because they've been exposed to latin (a big plus)!

Another good reason to forgo the pre-med route is that a pre-med degree doesn't prepare you for anything else if you ultimately decide med school isn't for you. At least with a comp science degree you can still make a living.

Be careful not to build up too much debt in your undergrad work. Most grad school is payed with student loans only, so you want to save your borrowing for that. You're better off going to a lesser known school for your undergraduate degree and a top name grad school than the other way around because employers will place more emphasis on your graduate work anyway.
Reply:My old old boyfriend that I dated in college was a CS major at Stanford undergrad, got a masters in math from Stanford, then went to USC medical school and became an orthopedic surgeon...he did fine. He just had to take a few more of the "pre-med"type classes that he missed as a CS major. Go for it.
